The first Lamborghini Huracan made its global debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. The all-new replacement for the best-selling Gallardo boasts a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine mid-mounted in a lightweight chassis. Its low, sharp, angular style was no different than a Lamborghini. The two-seater was a hit almost immediately.
The Automobili Lamborghini followed the original Huracán LP 610-4 (available in coupe and drop-top Spyder body styles) with its performance-tuned Performanté and updated Evo models. A special edition street model was offered and the automaker competed simultaneously in the upper tiers of motorsport with an approved race variant.
To save weight, over 75% of the STO exterior panels are made of lightweight carbon fiber. The rear fenders are manufactured from a unique carbon fiber “sandwich” utilizing aerospace technology, and the front windshield is a special glass that is 20% thinner to save weight. Instead of forged aluminum, Lamborghini uses lighter forged magnesium wheels. As a result of its focus on reducing mass, the STO’s curb weight is around 3,300 pounds, making it one of the lightest on the road.
Centrally mounted on a two-seater chassis, Lamborghini’s famous 5.2-liter V10 is rated for 640 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque and spins up to an 8,500 rpm redline. The computer adjusts engine responsiveness and other driving dynamics via a three-mode ANIMA toggle that controls the Lamborghini Veicolo Dinamica Integrata (LDVI) vehicle dynamics system. In the default setting (“STO”) the vehicle is configured for road driving. The track setup (“Trofeo”) maximizes performance through dedicated torque vectoring and traction control modulation, while the wet setup (“Pioggia”) ensures optimized grip on wet surfaces.
Other mechanical upgrades to the STO include wider wheel tracks, stiffer suspension bushings and unique roll bars. The damper system MagneRide 2.0 uses electromagnetic control to optimize stiffness. The brakes use premium carbon ceramic rotors called Brembo CCM-Rs, which provide four times the thermal capacity of conventional products. Lamborghini fitted the vehicle with special engineered tires from Bridgestone. These tires are available in two unique compounds, one for road use and one for track use.
All Huracán variants are cool exotic cars, but the track-ready superstar STO turns everything into an afterburner level. The experience of driving the Huracán STO is completely thrilling. It’s a heart-pounding, adrenaline rush, and sweaty palms. Words like ‘quiet’ and ‘relaxed’ do not exist in the STO’s dictionary.
The 2022 Lamborghini Huracán STO does not limit everything. And that’s exactly what today’s adult driving enthusiasts (children who drove matchboxes on vinyl tracks) need to fulfill their lifelong dreams.
