History

The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and his brother Nawab Fidai Khan, a famous architect of the imperial period, designed the garden together. Nawab Fidai Khan was also serving as governor during that time, and his responsibilities took him to various places. When he visited the Pinjore Valley, he was fascinated by the natural beauty and the wonder it has to offer. It was then that he decided to design a garden here in Pinjore.

It was built at the foot of the Himalayas and was one of the Mughal summer resorts of King Aurangzeb, who ruled in the then capital Lahore. Nawab Fidai Khan also oversaw the construction of the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore, and his skills and mastery of architecture were unparalleled at the time. In 1775, the maharaja Amar Singh of Fatalah bought it from Jagat Prakash, king of Sirmur.

Each of the seven terraces has several architectural wonders. On the highest first terrace is a palace built in the architectural style of the Mughal-Rajasthani style. The palace is called Shish Mahal and was built using mirrors. There is also the Hawa Mahal on this floor. The second floor has an arched entrance with a painted palace called the Rang Mahal. The third floor is adorned with fragrant flower beds, beautiful cypress trees and an enchanting orchard. The fourth floor is known as the Water Palace or Jal Mahal. Jal Mahal has a fountain.
